“A few years back, I had the chance to spend a month in India through the University of Winchester Department of TRS. The trip was set up in conjunction with ICS and organized by Sudarshan Pandey of ILSAP India. In a spontaneous way, I jumped at the chance to take this trip of a lifetime and I made up my mind pretty much right away. And can proudly say that in my whole journey with an ILSAP team in India, I learnt the importance of spiritual beliefs and practices of Indian faiths in historical perspective and with relevance to their modern expressions, which will not only give deeper insight into the core concepts of Indian traditions but also into the nature of language.
India is a continent that I had previously not had the chance to visit, despite a deep interest in the Buddhist religion which spanned three decades of my life. I always wanted to travel there for years, but somehow due to my lineup schedule had been reluctant to go simply as a short-term package holiday-maker. Therefore, the honor to join an educational expedition, which would give me the depth of peaceful experience and the personal interaction and sharing that I would always prefer to, this trip was exactly fulfilled with a meaningful study visit of different religion which was provided in conjunction with Loyola College.
Highlight moment of the trip
This study trip built upon the Death in World Religions module that I had already completed. During my stay in Chennai, I was able to learn more first-hand about the passage of life in and after death as experienced by a radically different culture to my own. I learned a few things about the religious general practices in the location while speaking with its hosts and direct personal participation at ritual events. This experience of mine enhanced my academic knowledge of death and religious studies which expand my cultural understanding and knowledge and ultimately proved to be an invaluable experience of a lifetime. Since my wholesome experience in India develop an essence of the concept of religion which brings me to the conclusion that we cannot identify a single feature which all religions exhibit in it but doesn’t mean that the concept of religion is meaningless.
At the start of the Religious studies India the much supportive team of ILSAP gave us a thorough cultural and religious orientation of Indian beliefs to get an overview of the program. This study abroad program gave me the opportunity to visit different religious sites in India and experience its rich culture and religion which proved to be profoundly spiritual. In addition, the study opportunities, lectures, observation, interaction and participation in the culture, the food, festivals, geography, wildlife, and music, as well as the academic enhancement enriched my life experience. In addition, being able to encounter the culture-shock of India, safely, among fellow students, leaders, and hosts, within the framework of a group trip, offered the possibility of sharing positive attitudes with fellow travelers and develop a genuine relationship which is beyond any benefit have sustained over the passage of time. The organization was second to none, the trips, transport, food, and lodging carefully planned and provided.
I would like to recommend the program to any individual, student, group or University, as it was a- trip of a lifetime learning opportunity that has enriched my own experience with a strong determination to keep up my involvement with India and to plan further trips in the future to explore its diverse culture and spirituality that earlier I got the privilege to experience a little of first hand.
Essentially, you can expect to learn about and experience the spirituality of India through personal experience and getting involved!. Yes, to strengthen your spiritual understanding, India is the ideal destination to volunteer in to get theology and religious studies. Don’t believe me? Explore the country once for own sake and leave the rest to the beauty of India, which will mesmerize you and leave you spellbound forever!”
